These are directionally slotted (grooved) to provide benefits such as reduced brake fade through pad de-gassing, increased wet performance through the dissipation of water, mud & dirt, improved pedal feel through increased pad bite, improved rotor life through pad deglazing and of course they look more purposeful behind alloy wheels.

Safety First - Disc rotors are a safety critical component and their condition has a large effect on your vehicles ability to stop. Disc rotors like disc pads are a friction material. As such they are designed to wear out. While motorists are generally well educated on the need to change and maintain their vehicles disc pads, disc rotors are often dismissed and overlooked. Disc rotor appearances can be deceiving as often a disc rotor can be badly worn, yet to the eye seem to be in good condition. To understand the true condition of a disc, measuring equipment must be employed.
Minimum Thickness - Disc rotors all have a specified minimum thickness. When disc rotors have worn to this minimum thickness they must be replaced. One of the many reasons for this minimum thickness is structural integrity which obviously has a direct relationship to safety. The allowed wear on disc rotors from new to minimum thickness is usually in the region of 2mm or less. That's only 1mm or less per disc face!
